Patrick Doan is a Berlin-based Canadian digital artist working under the name defasten. With a background in design, film, and architecture, his practice focuses on real-time 3D graphics, audiovisual performance, and immersive digital environments. His work operates at the intersection of contemporary digital art, electronic music, and large-scale visual production, and is developed specifically for live performance contexts, LED screens, immersive rooms, and architectural installations.
Patrick’s visual language is defined by audio-reactive, generative systems composed of deconstructed geometric forms, procedural motion, and synthetic digital landscapes. His works function as dynamic virtual environments rather than fixed videos, responding in real time to sound, data, and performer input. Through this approach, he constructs simulated digital realities that explore rhythm, spatial depth, and the relationship between sound, image, and scale.
He has collaborated extensively with international musicians including XI-N, Max Dahlhaus, Violent Magic Orchestra, Beardyman, SØS Gunver Ryberg, Fausto Mercier, Vladislav Delay & Max Loderbauer, Azu Tiwaline, Nova Heart, Blush Response, Yaporigami, Peter Kirn, and more. These collaborations span live audiovisual performances, immersive installations, and digital artworks presented in festivals, institutional contexts, and online platforms.
Patrick’s works have also been presented in events alongside a wide range of internationally recognized artists, including Ada Sokol, AG Cook, Alex Augier, Alex Rutterford, Beeple, Desilence & Suzanne Ciani, Dirk Koy, Kurt Hentschläger and Ulf Langheinrich (Granular Synthesis), Michael McAfee, Monocolor, µ-Ziq & ID:Mora, Nonotak, Paul Chadeisson, Portrait XO, Richie Hawtin, Rick Farin & Actual Objects, Ryoichi Kurokawa, Ryoji Ikeda, Sevi Iko Domochevsky, Zan Lyons, and many more. This situates his work within both experimental digital art discourse and contemporary electronic music culture.
Patrick’s work has been presented in over 25 countries worldwide. Selected presentations include VERTIGO 2025 with Hyperfuturism (Cape Town), Sónar Istanbul 2025, NFT Brazil 2024 (São Paulo), Integrated Systems Europe 2024 (Barcelona), Beyond Basel at Art Basel Miami, Neo Shibuya (Tokyo), The New Museum (New York), Ars Electronica, CTM Festival Cyberia, Transmediale, MIRA Festival (Barcelona), FLARE Festival (Shanghai), BRDG Channel 22 (Tokyo), and SIGGRAPH.
Patrick regularly gives talks on his digital art practice. These include Body of Work at Studio1111 (Berlin, 2025), Soirée XD at Journee (Berlin, 2023), TouchDesigner Roundtable XVIII at the Node Institute (Berlin, 2022), MOUVO Festival (Prague, 2022), and Cultural Center 3331 (Tokyo, 2016).
From 2015 to 2021, Patrick was a member of the sonic research collective AUDINT, whose work explored sound, politics, hauntology, and speculative technologies. During this period, AUDINT exhibited internationally at institutions and festivals such as Unsound Festival, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Arebyte London, MIRA Festival Barcelona, Sónar Istanbul, LOOP Berlin, and MUTEK Montréal.
Alongside his artistic practice, Patrick has contributed to large-scale entertainment, world tours, and international events with studios including Silent Partners Studio (European Games 2015, Katy Perry, Muse, Valorant), MALF Media (Integrated Systems Europe), Immersive London, XiteLabs (Kid Cudi), Moment Factory, EVOKE (Siemens), and more.
In collaboration with Plateau Candy and creative technologist Dan Molnar (Function Store), Patrick co-created FlowStates, a real-time data-driven artwork permanently installed at the IFO Institute of Economic Research in Munich, one of Germany’s leading economic think tanks.
Patrick’s work is also featured in the book The Age of Data published on Swiss design label Niggli Verlag. Edited by Christoph Grünberger, it showcases works from Refik Anadol, Daito Manabe, Joshua Davis, Joëlle Snaith, Christopher Bauder, Quayola, Nonotak, and more. With a foreword by Ian Anderson of The Designers Republic.
